Introduction

Internet has provided us greater opportunity to share information each other with the people around the world. This condition has changed people's paradigm in searching for information, from scanning books around the library to browsing web site in the internet. We just need to open the web browser and type the address of the website instead of turning the pages over and over at the corner of the library without guarantee of getting the information needed. This fact reduces time and effort used in classifying information available, thing that cannot happen before internet era.

In the present time, the internet has doubled in size every 9 to 14 months since it began in the late 1970s. In 1981 only 213 computers were connected to the Internet. By 2000 the number had grown to more than 100 million. The current number of people who use the Internet can only be estimated. One survey found that there were 61 million Internet users worldwide at the end of 1996, 148 million at the end of 1998, and 407 million by the end of 2000. Some analysts said that the number of users was expected to double again by the end of 2002.

This growth plus the fact that people can easily upload files to this network have flood the internet with information. That fact makes us exhausted in filtering for relevant information. We often get spam and factoid information instead of relevant one.

This has led researches in developing a system that returns the most relevant information based on what user need, Information Retrieval System. This system helps people to save time used in choosing the most suitable and relevant information from the set of information available. It ranks them according to their relevancy to the given query, the higher-ranked document leads to the higher relevancy.

Although the research in information retrieval has been started since the early days, the result is still far from perfect. The goal in information retrieval research is creating a system that can return only documents that are fully relevant with the query given. This gives a wide opportunity to other researchers in creating a better Information Retrieval System.
